Dr. Keiki R Mehta Awarded the Padma Shri

A regular reader Minoo Naval Unwalla tipped us off to the news that Dr. Keiki R Mehta, one of India’s leading opthalmologists was awarded the Padma Shri this month.

Dr. Keiki R. Mehta is India’s leading Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, a pioneer in Intraocular implants,Glaucoma and Phacoemulsification who has won many Gold Medals both in India and Internationally. An outstanding researcher and clinician, he has extensive experience of Cataract, having commenced intraocular implant for the first time in India in 1972.

He developed the first soft implant in the world in 1978 for which he received the Grand Honors Award from the National Eye Research Foundation in USA IN 1981.

Was the first in India to do Radial Keratotomy in 1976 and the first to introduce Phacoemulsification
in regular practice in 1988 for which he is now known as the “Father of Indian Phacoemulsification. He is Medical Director and Chief of the Mehta International Eye Institute and Colaba Eye Hospital, at Colaba established by him.

He has received Grand Honors Award from the National Eye Research Foundation, Chicago, USA, and the Triple Ribbon Award of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, USA, for
Outstanding Research in Ophthalmology.

We congratulate Dr. Mehta and wish him greater success in the years to come.

This has been a great year for the Parsi community with two of our own being awarded the nation’s highest civilian awards, the other being Ratan Tata.
