The below is an Op-Ed by regular reader and good friend of Parsi Khabar, Mickie Sorabjee.

After baiting and rubbing him the wrong way during the watershed 2008 Bombay Parsee Punchayet elections and after, PTA editorial appears to be the first unbelievable quarter to sua sponte support the sitting Chairman Dinshaw Mehta, and pro bono present his lone crusader case before the community.

Actually the dynamics of Parsi politics had already undergone a fundamental change with the advent of misapplied United Adult Franchise set in motion without foremost working on an electoral code of conduct, and the first BPP trustees’ election in 2008 under its aegis was before now the defining moment. Sadly, the casualty was the intended beneficiary. At this point, “any seeming unity among elected Trustees now seen falling apart at the seams” was a foregone conclusion in what was then a hastily cobbled coalition of political convenience.

There is a preamble to this unfolding saga_ at the turn of the last century when an over rated small time politician crossed the threshold of the august BPP portals in 1996 as a first time Trustee, it triggered a gradual downhill slide of the dignity and decorum of the haloed Apex Body. The seeds of Adult Franchise, the hallmark of a political mindset, were sown by this late “young man in a hurry” with aspirations to cling on to this lucrative seat. With ethos and character of this redoubtable Parsi institution sent for a toss with the entry of this new breed, in no time a renowned and respected organisation was turned into an institution of disarray. A decade and half later, the class of Trustees that we are foisted with on the current board, bear silent testimony to this inexcusable ravage. Like it or not, Dinshawji was an active party to this woeful rot. Today it has germinated into chaotic and questionable Gher-no-Gambhar management with no one to guard the wayward custodians themselves. Much like politics, it has become the last arena for wheeler-dealers that self-respecting gentlemen are wary to tread.

With his above political crony and colleague’s premature exit from our planet after a short lived Pyrrhic second-term in BPP, Mehta sought and managed to get his widow, Armaity, elected as a trustee in the husband’s vacant seat, expecting her to be a pliable rubber-stamp. But he overlooked that when you play footsie with the wrong partner, the chickens come home to roost. Besides, with the infamous turncoat legacy now vested in the surviving family members of the controversial deceased Trustee, an old friendship took a back seat when at-stake fiscal investments charted the new course.

It is pure conjecture to say that post 2008 elections "WAPIZ pushed Mehta in the forefront, so that he faced the ire of the media, the Courts and the ‘new liberal’ lobby to portray Dinshaw Mehta as the bad boy of the BPP, and WAPIZ, as the increasingly reasonable face of mainstream orthodoxy". Ironically the tug of war between AFP and WAPIZ, pushed Dinshaw Mehta into WAPIZ arms. The seasoned Dinshaw Mehta with all his faults known to be a good friend and kind hearted human being is no suckling amateur in office as a BPP Trustee and certainly not one to be easily manipulated into provocation against undefined enemies. Had Dinshaw displayed principled pragmatism from the beginning and refused to be browbeaten by WAPIZ when it was the need of the hour, Parsis would have been spared this lamentable day in the history of a once illustrious BPP. Clearly it was a collective effort and not for a moment did it appear to onlookers that Chairman Dinshaw Mehta alone was responsible for hounding seventh elected trustee Noshir Dadrawalla out of his rightful 7 years term of trusteeship that has left the election weary community facing yet another premature and gratuitous voting extravaganza.

In the matter of housing and properties issues, what fruits have legit beneficiaries reaped from Mehta’s mastery in the subject and what has it accrued to the community good? Now when he sees his monopoly in that field endangered by another ambitious co-Trustee, he has objected to a WAPIZ-backed husband and wife at the same time on the Board of a charitable trust, that too, the Bombay Parsi Panchayet. To secure his own possible isolation in such a scenario (Noshir can have the last laugh here), Mehta has shrewdly made amply clear that he will not support Anahita Desai wife of sitting Trustee Yezdi Desai, but an independent candidate of merit. No doubt his demand is widely echoed across the community as on the propriety count Mehta is bound to have many supporters. But it remains debatable whether there is any legal backing for objection to a simultaneous spouse duo on the BPP Board.

With each one having his own axe to grind, the community welfare is being ground to zilch by the current egocentric board of BPP trustees. There is only one way to eradicate this malaise. Putting aside personal differences, our creme-a-la-creme legal luminaries should put their heads together and seriously consider knocking on the Supreme Court doors to revert Trustees’ electoral scheme to our mammoth and august charitable organisation to pre UAF status quo ante. Back to donors and their heirs/representatives, as benefactors alone should have right to decide who will administer their donations meant purely for charity. Logically speaking, beneficiaries can rightly have no say on who gets into the BPP Boardroom. This is the opportune moment to act before the once magnificent Bombay Parsee Punchayet is soon transformed to Desai Mistry Mistree & Associates.

In this unsavoury battle regrettably reduced to a clash between the rank and file masses and the ivory tower classes, and offensively touted as a skirmish between deep pockets and empty pockets, this pen would rather wager on a Dinshaw backed contender than a WAPIZ-schooled nominee. Till then_ natak jova, ane jamva chalo jee.

FIVE  stars for Mickie’s comments. She has echoed the sentiments of many sober individuals disgusted at the way our community has been a subject of spectacle. We claim to be an educated community but have degraded to a level which would place a criminal politician of U.P. or Bihar look like a saint.
Yes, why not,  we have to revert to earlier system of Election by Donors only. We should start an online petition in this regard and as Mickie has stated the best brains among the legal fraternity should get the Scheme of Election reviewed and I assume even the High Court can be approached for such a REVIEW.

  2. Byram.

It is  of immense satisfaction to note that we have in our midst, persons of calibre, intellectual insight, and integrity to call spade a spade. The first Desai  Berjis, a lawyer of eminence, in his zeal to be a kingmaker lost sight of the pitfalls that awaited Universal Adult Franchise. (NOT United, as inadvertently mentioned in the fifth line of the edit). The community is ‘enjoying’ the fruits of this introduction of democracy in the mistaken belief that community members were a literate lot, not susceptible to lollipops.Unwittingly he ushered in mobocracy.
Now we are saddled with Mistrees.Mistris/Mistrys to align with Desais. Nothing can be more disastorous for the future of this micro minority then triumph of mobocracy and dynastic hegemony. Well spoken Ms. Sorabjee. May people like you and there is no dearth of talent in our community to speak out thus and more importantly take remedial steps to rescue and save Parsees from such ‘politicians’ or else time will not be far off when somebody will sit in DHARNA outside B.P.P. Office chanting “Mera Trustee Nalayak Hai’ in the same manner as was witnessed in Anna Hazare’s campaign.

Thanks for the bouquets from rational minded and awaiting brickbats from the obtuse. Heartening to note that there are several community brethren, here and elsewhere, rooting for a return to the earlier system of election for BPP Trustees. This is easier said than done.
Anyone can knock on the SC doors. In the larger interest of justice a technical delay may just be condoned for delay in filing an application at this extremely late stage, three years after the switch of electoral process. But for the case to withstand critical legal scrutiny and a revision to be considered, the Apex Court has to be suitably convinced that plea for review is intended as a genuine remedial step
    1) to halt the juggernaut of further mismanagement of BPP Trust affairs,                                          2) to avert grave injustice to helpless beneficiaries at large,                                                         3) the crucial application has consent of the requisite majority Parsis for a review of matter,            as in hindsight there is a realisation that Universal Adult Franchise is more detrimental than beneficial to interests of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet which is essentially a custodian of vast charities and properties by philanthropic donors and which have to be executed according to Trust Deed.
It would be ideal if at least an interim order were to be obtained that no wasteful elections are held and vacant seat on BPP Board remains unfilled until hearing of application.
An on-line petition by the computer savvy alone cannot muster that sort of an encouraging base. It has to hold weight alongside a door-to-door campaign for collecting signatures as at time of unified voice protest against name change of Khodadad Circle in Dadar which is a little difficult here because of obvious opposition from those who stand to gain by continued UAF and privately gloat that Adult Franchise is a fait accompli.
The only hope is that those actively social minded like Jamshed Kanga, Homi KhushroKhan and their connected supporters step in here too like they did in the matter of banned priests.
Alas, even if the tea is from the same garden, the flavour in their tea cups might be converse to them as tasters.

    Very well articulated.
The community got the government it deserved. They were given a choice. They made their choice. Now let them suffer the consequences. It is not advisable to petition the Courts”Give a thief a long rope, and he will hang himself”.This election cast your vote for Anahita Desai. Not only will the Desai clan become powerful within the BPP, but even within WAPIZ.Just as Indira Gandhi turned the tables on Kingmaker Kamaraj, the Desai couple can outgrow WAPIZ and float their own outfit once they are financially strong. History is replete with instances of puppets turning on the puppeteers.

     Ms. Sorabji.
When I read such Edits, I  am immediately reminded of  drama of Kar Nataka which we get to watch on T.V. What is happening in this Southern state, shameful as it is, is being reenacted by Parsees in Mumbai. I hope that in short time a Resolution is not passed at the so called instance of self styled High Priests banning the use of the word NEPOTISM.
Rumors abound that these self styled High Priest want to reccomend to the community to place their mental faculties in cold storage and vote for a particular candidate. Not that  other candidates are  better eqipped. So await the next issue and issues after that of THANDA MANE  AMDAVADI FRUIT CONCENTRATE  alias FPJ.

I wonder if the same stalwarts – Mr. Khushrokhan and Mr. Kanga could quickly devise a way by which the entire group of trustees are made to step down and the new election for all seats arranged without dinners and gifts and canvassing.  To allow them to continue for the next four years endangers the very fabric of the Zoroastrian community as these guys are mere Parsis.

Move over and away all you BRAND AMBASSADORS. Here we come, Doongerwadi workers expressing solidarity for a candidate who will disburse doles to us from interest on corpus of charity funds left by ancestors as though she is giving OUT OF HER OWN  SOURCES.
What do these guys in FPJ think the readers to be. Are readers so gullible to be ‘guided’ by workers of Towers of Silence? Is this expression of support base really voluntary. Going to Doongerwadi and coercing persons to sign under “SHARMA SHARMI’ is anything but manipulating the poor workers making them sign on dotted lines as they manipulate the self styled HIGH Priests to sign.

If the concerned candidates meaning ALL have attributes to be eligible and have done work for assisting and helping community members, then they do NOT need .recommendation from all and sundry. Go Green says the Government, Save Trees and ironically  here we have candidates misusing the print media to ‘project’ themselves as “Saints”.If such candidates  had all such goody goody  qualities, why did she not contest the polls in 2008 itself is a ten million dollar question?

I have a very good mind to get these poor people at the Tower of Silence who were forced to sign the letter endorsing Anahita Deasi for Trusteeship when she visits Godrej Baug for her campaigning this week end. I am currently not in Bombay but will try to make it.How cheap and low can a person get to win the elections. I strongly beleive the BPP to be  gold mine if for becoming a trustee of the BPP  people are ready to spend and have spent in crores to become a trustee. Give me one good reason why any individual standing for elections will spend from his hard earned money a sum of a crore to be on board if not to make money. If i had that kind of money I would rather directly spend a crore for the upliftment of the poor than spend a crore on getting oneself elected.

Arzan. This is the pitfall of adult franchise. No wonder many professionals just tuned down the offer to stand for the Elections. The ‘faltu’ language that F.P.J. is renowned for has not improved depite the High Court frowning on such language. They are their own enemies. The differences  within the Board of Seven were always there but post 2008, they have brought all welfare work to a halt.  Charity has become a business and I have half a mind to start online Petition for appointment of an Administrator from some eminent Parsee.

Candidate Anahita Desai’s manifesto in the weekly WAPIZ mouthpiece of June 10, has a couple of self-admissions_
    ·         The most glaring of them being that though not a Trustee she is involved with the execution of various projects/activities of the BPP.
    ·         That because of her overwhelming love for the community she wants to protect our beautiful religion and the Parsi-Irani Zoroastrian Community’s religious traditions and institutions.
    ·         That WAPIZ is an organisation formed to protect and uphold our religion and its institutions.

While making out as if religion is the sole preserve of herself and WAPIZ, nowhere in her grandiose declaration of commitment to community has she commented on the raison d’être of our Bombay Parsee Panchayet and how she professes to contribute to the actual management of the Trust’s vast properties and funds to the letter and spirit of the Trust Deed. Psychology is not exactly a domain of knowledge that can be an asset on the Board of an altruistic institution. Its not cosmetic streamlining but hardcore professional expertise that will aid better functioning of BPP.

Her pronouncement of commitment to community also sounds hollow, because of her non-cooperation to schedule the Elections post the monsoon season keeping in mind the inconvenience to the electorate and accommodating them in this unpredictable inclement weather so none is deterred in casting ballot.

Ms Desai should stick to her excellent track record of social and community service as CEO of WAPIZ and use that organisation’s platform as proposer and propaganda activist without drawing our BPP Charity Trust and the community into a quagmire of religiosity with her aspirations of holding high office as BPP Trustee, which is best left to those better qualified and with greater credibility.

The current Free Press WAPIZ page is conspicuously avoiding mentioning the reason for De.Mehroo Bengalee disassociating herself from extending support to Mrs. A.Y Desai, despite the former being still a part of WAPIZ.

The way in which WAPIZ is getting some high priests to blow its horn as saviour of the Parsee race and religion, is akin to a few mullahs propounding a twisted interpretation of their holy book_ and plenty of simpletons and dense boneheads out there in our community who easily swallow this garbage.
Intolerance of freedom of an individual’s religious beliefs is unacceptable and should be condemned. This tendency needs to be hounded and the WAPIZ agenda not given legitimacy by allowing it s dogmatists to overtake the Bombay Parsee Panchayet . Trust affairs and religion don’t mix. Even the High Court has ruled on that.

Agreed, manifestos are meaningless. I will be extremely happy if a candidate states openly that he or she wants to be Trustee to make money for his or her famil. At least that will signify ‘honesty’ in admitting the aim for standing for election.

With high decibel campaigning reaching  a crescendo this weekend, it is this pen’s final blitz before the elections _WAPIZ’s relentless  desire to ride on BPP sails as  the face of galvanised religiosity, drives it to create a deceptive imagery of a knight in shining armour fighting for race and religion,.

WAPIZ overreach in BPP as it becomes increasingly bigoted should make the community wary.  Stoking Parsee Politics and mixing BPP issues with religious fervour is a WAPIZ blueprint for tactical advantage in short run. To thwart it from becoming retrograde move for community in long term, voters will have to put on their thinking caps to cast ballot.

Better a dependable traditionalist and moderate orthodox like Munchi Cama, than a member of a quasi-religious organisation whose agenda is suspect.

Very very true Ms. Mickie. But the million dollar question is if the voters will exercise their minds by putting on their thinking caps or will cast their vote on basis of false fear of religion being endangered. The Voter has to realize that at no time the Community was so divided and  in the past the community did not have to knock at doors of the judiciary against the apex body viz B.P.P. and the latter suffering a setback.

On one more Friday, another WAPIZ page, and another motivation to pick up the pen._ Why should WAPIZ attack Dinshaw Mehta, Dinshaw Tamboly and Kersie Randeiria for joining forces? For all their playing-up Parsi Politics, they have evidently not heard of the age old strategical doctrine from Kautilya’s Arthashastra : An enemy of my enemy is my friend.

As election days come to pass WAPIZ hierarchy’s desperation is showing. They are shitting bricks and losing their cool, finding it hard to control their base instincts. Their crude behaviour is revealing their true colours under pressure. How else can they explain their street-side hooliganism at Rustom Baug in the course of the day while voters were quietly going about the business of casting their ballot.  Possibly, the low turnout on their home-turf contrary to their expectations and a whiff of the direction in which votes were swaying, has set the panic in them.
According to a first-hand account which comes from a volunteer who was present at the scene of chaos and witnessed the entire appalling occurrence, their Chairman from Ahmedabad was allegedly seen in the side room distributing notes post lunch to voters he had carted from Bardoli , and when some photographer on site tried to take pictures he was prevented from doing so understandably by Anahita Desai. Thereafter WAPIZ gang of three – Areez Khambatta, Khojeste Mistree and Yazdi Desai – along with their ally trustee Jimmy Mistry were seen in deep confabulation for some time, whereupon the last mentioned burst on the scene and unprovokingly hurled serious accusations at BPP Chairman who retaliated verbally. Things got out of hand as claims and counter charges were bandied around to the shock of bystanders who had come to vote. There was a hand to hand as the trustee’s bodyguards got into a scuffle with Dinshaw Mehta’s boys who were sought to being attacked. In the pandemonium his wife Pansy fainted and was rushed to Masina Hospital next door by Trustee Arnavaz Mistry. Someone sent for the police and the ally Trustee allegedly fled from the scene with his henchmen though five of them were supposedly taken in for interrogation.
Once again a demonstration of how inappropriate Adult Franchise is for election of Trustees to our apex Charity Trust whose worth can be gauged merely from the lowly depths to which WAPIZ and their ally sink to get their candidate a foothold in the institution for majority control. Unless Munchi Cama the gentleman candidate is voted as BPP Trustee this time, the community can bid adieu to the once haloed body of our community.

Trust Funds can be used for betterment of Community and not satisfaction of personal egos.

The site belongs to NOBODY and  though I do not have the privilege  of knowing this lady  Mrs. Sorabjee personally, nonetheless have greatest  respect for her professionalism..It is not she or me or other like minded who like to hear  what she likes but Ronny it is persons like you who like to  read praises for Parsee Rasputin and the Amdavadi businessman who has developed LOVE for Mumbai for reasons of large real estate belonging to BPP. Ronny can you state the contributution of WAPIZ from the day of its inception till date.? Mumbai Parsees were known for tolerance, rationality and  never  washed dirty linen in public. Can you the same of WAPIZ page? From the day of its creation, WAPIZ is hell bent on creating strife, discord and fissions within the tiny community. Before ending this post,my question to any WAPIZ sympathizer is to clarify  if Batliwalla Agiary Land or plot adjacent to it has been really sold or not as alleged in JAME of yesterday?
My second poser is why this Amdavadi is not on Board of Amdavad Parsee Punchayet. Is it that he considers Amdavad Parsees lesser Zoroastrians?.
What happened yesterday at Rustom Baug has happened a bit sooner than expected. IT IS THE PRICE COMMUNITY IS PAYING FOR ITS INDIFFERENCE OF GOING TO VOTING STATIONS IN 2008 that parasites got elected to RULE over you and me not to govern the Funds and Properties as they should be. It is time that public spirited Parsees join hands and approach the Court to amend the system to restrict voting rights only to those who are donors.

Mr Ronny you are wrong on all conjectures about me.
Foremost, as Mr Contradhongi has already kindly pointed out, you have changed my gender.
Next you have got the ownership wrong. This site as everyone is aware, is a Wadia project and is young enterprising arZan’s commendable brainchild. I merely contribute posts which I think constitute worthwhile news of interest to his readers among the Parsee/Irani diaspora, which is the USP of arZan’s endeavour of hosting Parsi Khabhar. I try to avoid frivolous one-to-one arguments like this comment here.
Again, I take affront at the insinuation that I am on anyone’s payroll, as for over two decades now I have been fiercely independent in my views on varied subjects. FYI I never put pen to paper unless I have verified all facts first. Writers have their own reliable sources.
Lastly, Mr. Ronny-come-lately, timing is paramount in journalism, as with every passing day, a story becomes dated.

  92. Contradhongi

Mickie, It is my civic sense to uphold what is right that prompted me to rebut what Ronny said. Perhaps he is to innocent to fathom this dirty politics and may realise his present judgment in later years.

Mr. Ronny., The facts as they are and narrated here above have been corroborated by independent individuals who were present. You ought to have ascertained the facts before jumping to make allegation of biased reporting. An inherent bias to wards the mischief makers is palpable from the text of what you yourself have stated. Regardless of your own loyalties the facts as they are cannot be altered to satisy personal preferences.

Before putting their pen on paper and placing their autographs, our self styled High Priests should know the antecedents of the person they are asking the community members to elect. The present scenario looks like some Bollywood Celebrity endorsing a product without actually using it. We expect a matured  leadership from the Clergy and here is one more instance when they are responsible for MISGUIDING, yes MISGUIDING the Community. Any wonder they are lampooned.

    Again ALLEGATIONS.
contradhongi I think you don’t get what I am saying
    Parsis are NAFFATS.
They care about a person ( Candidate in this Elections ) if they realize that person would do his needful when he gets elected or they see a threat from another Candidate. I don’t see any threat from anyone here.
Personally, I don’t care who wins as the Community will be where and what it is. No one ever cared.
Much was written here about Rustom Baug. What happened in the end ?
Both Trustees circulated joint clarifications, which proves what was written here is wrong and so are the chamchaas.
I am on no body’s side because IN POLITICS KOI KISI KA NAHI
I just put my short view which was not acceptable to single directional ears of mickie madam

Zerxes you will like to know that our Chairman, Mr. Dinshaw Mehta and Trustee, Mr. Jimmy Mistry have signed joint letter that there was just heated up arguments between them and no assaults made.
This means people with vested interests, who wasted no time and exaggerated the entire issue on this blog lied to us.

Mickie maai you may consider yourself wise no problem but understand problems of others also.
You are 1st mickie I met who turned out to be a female.
    Who is everyone ?
Many don’t even know about this blog
    I came here through google
I think vested interest is paramount for you in journalism displayed by you here.
How on earth do you get so much time to write unless there is vested interests.
Let Voters decide. Let them attend Election Meetings of Candidates.
Why do you people want to corrupt minds of people here ?
    VESTED INTERESTS is the word

Ronny, You have rightly chosen th word corrupting the minds. That’s precisely what was being done by one Amdavadi by doling out Rs.1,000/ to those who  has taken “pains’ to come down to Mumbai from Gujarat hamlets. But then that is in the interest of DHARAM that he besmirches his own Karm.

  116. Mickie Sorabjee

“Everyone”, refers to whoever has heard of this site and visits it or comments therein.
Honest writing is not corrupting. The weekly slanderous brainwashing WAPIZ page is corrupting. My vested interest is supporting truth (not “untruth” as some ruffled WAPIZ supporters make it out to be). It makes no sense and shows desperation bracketing a pointed account of occurrence with other exaggerated versions if there were any.
A self-serving joint statement cannot wish away the unholy ruckus at Rustom Baug. You would do well to read Viraf Mehta’s clarifying appeal addressed to community at large.

My Compliments to Rathestar for uttering “two weeks back as he/she did “MERA TRUSTEE  …………  HAI ” We need more stuff like this.

  122. Farsak Ashli.

     Ms.
