An exhibition by Kersi Dubash, displaying a wide range of antique Parsi Garas, Gara borders and Gara shalwar kameez suits, French chiffons, Lucknow saris and shalwar kameez suits, Kantha saris and pure cotton saris, is attracting large number of visitors especially women.
The exhibition that would continue till July 14 at a local hotel is offering everything to meet the requirements of those ladies who prefer to wear something elegant, exquisite and unique. Most of the saris displayed in the exhibition were handmade and embroidered with traditional sari blouses having embellishment of pearls, crystals, beads and sequence work.
Dubash is exhibiting the traditional saris and shalwar kameez for last 14 years under the name of ‘Nazakat Collection’. He picks up exclusive pieces from different manufacturers and brings them in Pakistan once or twice a year as according to him he has a huge clientele here and his pieces sells like hot cake. “Each time the response is just marvellous which encourages me to continue the exercise of conducting exhibitions more frequently,” Dubash said.
Though presenting extremely traditional form of embroideries, all the saris and shalwar kameez have been given a contemporary look as well with the use of colour combinations that are in fashion these days. The clothes were an amalgamation of hues, ravishing and glittering styles with pale and vibrant shades on heavy and light fabrics such as silk, chiffon, crepe, cotton, and chickenkari.
The display of bright coloured Kanjeevaram Saris was one of the unique features of the exhibition. Kanjeevarams have always been very popular at the time of weddings and forms an important part of a bridal wardrobe. Kanjeevaram silk saris are very traditional and never go out of fashion. “Only few people know the worth of Kanjeevaram. The celebrities like Rekha, Shabana Azmi and Kiran Kher wear it as its sari is made of a heavy silk,” said Dubash.
Dubash lamented the tense relationship between India and Pakistan and urged for peaceful relationships between the two countries. “We have fought three wars and now it’s time to win each others’ heart with love as love has more power,” he said.
He said that there should be easier visa policy in both countries in order to promote people-to-people contact, which is necessary to end the misconceptions regarding each other.
Besides clothes the traditional Indian jewellery was also displayed on the occasion. The Indian artificial jewellery is already very popular in Pakistan due to the
advent of Indian Television channels. So the jewellery displayed by Dubash received a huge public response. Moreover, fancy Indian laces to embellish clothes were also displayed.
