Unable to raise enough money to buy land for their first fire temple in Navi Mumbai, Parsi-Zoroastrians have asked the government to extend the deadline for payment by a month.

The community has been allotted a plot in Koparkhairane by CIDCO, the local planning agency at a cost of Rs63 lakh. They have to pay the money by the end of October but have not been able to raise enough funds.

Shahrukh Doctor, a retired engineer who is president of the New Bombay Zoroastrian Association Charitable Trust, has said that they have managed to raise Rs54 lakh, but the final target looks elusive. “We will not be able to raise the money by the end of the month,” said Doctor.

Around 60 families with a total of around 250 members are registered with the trust, but Doctor estimates that many other Zoroastrian families living in Navi Mumbai are not listed with them. The nearest fire temple is at Thane or Dadar Parsi Colony.

Dinshaw Mehta, chairman of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet, the community’s apex representative body said, “In my living memory, there has been no instance of a new fire being consecrated. This fire needs to be tended by priests and needs regular prayers.

Looking at the way the community’s population is declining, there will be nobody to look after the fire. A fire temple is therefore not a good idea. A Dadgah (or a lower-grade place of worship) is a better as the fire there is not consecrated and therefore does not need a full-time priest.”

What is happening to our community?  India’s most successful and most charitable boasting industrialists such as the Tatas, Godrejes, Wadia, Jeejeebhoys and many more why are these people not able to assist with the raising of funds?  Shame on us Parsis who give so much to others but cannot help within ourselves.

at another time, not too distant past, the panchayet would have stepped in with the difference. it is a wonder this community exists at all with the indifference……..and there is no real decline of numbers punchayat people.  i have no hard figures but  even a non statistician can gestimate that with the 70000 parsis they allow to be counted with the non inclusion rules, there are of course 30000 or so migrations out,   and at least 50000 intermarried and their children, not, and who should be counted.

Our BPP is blind we have so many Agyaries at Fort area in Mumbai which are hard to maintain. If one of them that can be mooved to Navi Mumbai it would be great. Our BPP only knows how to make money and put in their pockets like other politicians….. It would be great if there is one fire temple and in todays hectic life everyone would like to begin their day by going to agyari….. If mr mehta you use your brains properly then community will appreciate and remember you by your deeds.

Why BPP is still not contributing to construct this agiary ??? They have sufficient funds now. Even trustees can pay from their pockets also if they want to do something for the religion in which they are born.
