A combination of Persian and Gujarati food, Parsi cuisine is interesting and flavourful

Zarine and Nozer Daroga are both passionately fond of food, so they decided to open a restaurant specialising in the cuisine they grew up liking — Parsi. “We opened Daddy’s Deli, eight years ago in Richmond Town but since the place was too small, we shut for a while and have now relocated to Indiranagar,” says Zarine. Discreetly tucked away, Daddy’s Deli serves authentic Parsi food over the weekend which include five meals served to walk-in clients from Friday to Sunday afternoon. A combination of  Persian and Gujarati food, Parsi cuisine is interesting and flavourful with enough variety to please a finicky palate.

The menu has all the well-known Parsi favourites like chicken farcha (fried chicken), patrani machhi (steamed fish wrapped in banana leaf), dhansak ( mutton in a lentil gravy), sali murghi (spicy chicken with fine potato crisps), colmi no pulao (prawn pulao served with dal), sali boti (boneless mutton in an onion and tomato gravy with potato strips) and tamota ni russ (mutton cutlets with tomato gravy). “Most people are familiar with dhansak, which we serve with a cinnamon and flavoured brown rice and patrani machhi. Dhansak is a high protein heavyweight with dals, meat and vegetables in a sauce flavoured with a special spice mixture. Accompanied by kachumbar, a salad of finely chopped onions, tomatoes, green chillies and coriander, it’s the perfect Sunday lunch. Our spices are all homemade and brought from Mumbai,” says Nozer.

The starters include brain cutlets, akuri which is spicy scrambled eggs on toast or ladies fingers and potatoes cooked in different ways for vegetarians.

The main courses come with a choice of rice or rotlis (soft rotis)and a meal of dhansak, brown rice and salad. The sali boti in a rich red gravy with a tangy sweet sour flavour topped with thin slivers of potato is a must try so is the patrani machhi. In fact, all the dishes are made with care and attention, culled from old family recipes and meticulously supervised by Zarine and Nozer.

Desserts are also made in-house with the warm, creamy lagan nu custard, a rich textured chocolate mousse without the gelatin and homemade kulfi. Prices are very reasonable and the menu is authentic Parsi all the way with lots of choice for both vegetarians and non vegetarians.

Daddy’s Deli is located at The Executive Inn, 12th Main HAL 2nd Stage Indiranagar.
