Dr. Yazdi Italia, Ph.D. is a Translation Scientist. Since 1978, He is one of the pioneers and Ex. Hon. Director (2006 – 2012) of India’s first Sickle Cell Anemia Control Program of Government of Gujarat. This program was awarded Prime Minister’s Award as a model project for all India level. He is co-investigator for many ICMR research projects including Indo-US NBS project.
He was recently bestowed an Award by the Government of Gujarat for his significant contribution in Health Services for Prevention and Control of Sickle Cell Anemia and Thalassemia. This award was presented to him by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel.

Dr. Yazdi Italia saves the lives of many tribals from sickle cell anemia.

Valsad: Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease found in tribals. This disease is caused due to deficiency of color formula. The physical and mental sufferings caused by this disease are very severe. The work of freeing the tribals from the pain of this hereditary disease in the Duganral and Atanrial areas was done by Dr. Dr Yazdi Italia has been doing it for years.
Sickle cell treatment is covered in state health services
Since the health services of the state covered the treatment of sickle cell in the year 2005-06, till now its prevalence is spread across 14 tribal districts. The first 2 sickle cell patients in the state were found in Valsad district. Which was diagnosed by Dr. Yazdi Italia of Valsad Raktdan Kendra. Dr. Valsad Blood Donation Center who diagnosed these two patients as having lived the longest life in the whole of India. Yazdi goes to Italy.
Valsad Blood Donation Center was entrusted with the responsibility of providing health services to the state of Gujarat in India.
The first sickle cell project of the state was launched by Dr. Yazdi Italia. For the project of sickle cell, there was a discussion on the big and small things. In the tribal areas of the state, it was necessary to check them to protect them from sickle cell anemia and sickle cell disease. He said that to protect the tribal people of the state from sickle cell, a large number of people were simultaneously screened for sickle cell in the tribal areas. In the year 2006, Narendra Modi assigned the responsibility. In the year 2006, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, assigned the responsibility of the sickle cell anemia control program to the Valsad Blood Donation Center to serve the health of the state of Gujarat for the first time in India.

In 2011, the state’s program was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for having an innovative approach that could improve the health of India’s numerous tribal communities. Which was also imitated by other states of India. Now this sicklesec project has been further accelerated and included as a project of the health department of the central government. The people who are suffering from this disease are being given free treatment and medicine.
Statistics of sickle cell
Talking about the statistics of sickle cell anemia, there are more than 2500 patients in Valsad district. Navsari district has more than 1700 patients and Dang district has more than 700 patients. There are a total of 29,600 sickle cell anemia patients in the entire state of Gujarat.
