The number of girls born in the Parsi community in Mumbai dipped from 104 in 2010 to 87 in 2011, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The average annual births within the Parsi community over the last five years was 113 boys and 101 girls. “The figures reflect a strong preference for the male child among Parsis, akin to the rest of society,” said Jehangir Patel, editor, Parsiana, a monthly community magazine that published the birth data. Patel pointed out that the skewed birth figures suggested that 10% of males born in the last six years will either have to marry outside the community or remain single.

However, demographers said a single year’s birth figures cannot establish a trend. “The birth numbers of one year are insignificant to suggest a trend since the community is a small sample and a few births in a year can make a big difference,” said Zubin Shroff, doctoral candidate, Harvard University, who published a research article last year on inter-caste marriages in the city’s Parsi community.

Doctors ruled out sex selective abortions as a reason for the decline. “The Parsi community does not resort to sex selective abortion,” said Dr Anahita Pandole, a gynaecologist who runs Bombay Parsi Panchayet’s (BPP) infertility programme at Jaslok Hospital, Peddar Road. “Many families want only one child irrespective of gender, which could be the reason behind the decline,” she added.

“Sex selective abortion has never been a cause of concern in the community, given that the social structure is favourable for women,” said Shroff. “Late marriages and low fertility could be a reason, but the data is insufficient to depict a trend,” he added.

“We are a declining community, but the number of births has usually been stable,” said Dinshaw Mehta, chairman, BPP.

The comments made by the Editor of Parsiana are totally incorrect regarding preferences. You should visit many villages and districts in Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Punjab, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu etc., where not a single female child is born for many years where deliberate female infanticide is carried out selectively. This is not practised by persons belonging to Muslim or Christains religions or Zoroastrians but people belonging to the majority community and their off shoot religions. It is these people who in turn marry Parsi women and create total shortage of females in our secular community. Are you to suggesting that we start male infanticide to satisfy your feeling and increase supply of females for marriage to these other communities.
It is irresponsible comments by rich people like you who have made life a total hell for the middle class conservative Parsis. You want to impose your brand of Zoroastrianism in which you have failed for many years. Irrespective of whatever you or your reformists friends do, this community is doomed because of your anti-Parsi attitude and other communities have taken advantage of this gullible community which is suppressed by one and all.

AS IF the so-called “conservatives” have done a great job in preserving the community. What kutroo-nu-caca! In fact it is YOUR KIND that has done little for the community other than do everything it its power to stomp the life out of it with that damned “we are pure blooded Aryan Persians so only marry within and while you are at it drink cow urine and chop the foreskin off your boys” gupsup. Do you realize how much of the rituals in the religion come in fact from Hinduism, and yet your conservative babas are off telling us how “pure” we all really are!

Piloomani, it is you and people like you that is killing off the community. Thanks to your kind of thinking, in the very near future the closest way to seeing a group of Parsis will be in a wax museam!

I fully agree with piloomani. We must increase parsi community by marrying parsis only. Especially lot of parsi girls are marrying nonparsees. This must be stopped now. Otherwise our community will keep on decreasing day by day. Statistics of 87 parsi births in mumbai in a whole year is very very less.Bpp please arise and awake from your deep slumber and do something better for the community.

Siloo maybe the boys were afraid of having their foreskin chopped off hence refused to take birth??????? And can you make up your mind about kagra ke kutroo nu caca? Thanks for making our day with your nonsense and exhibiting your ignorance about the Parsis.

    Granny Siloo Kapadia
Yes I agree with the you the conservatives have not been able to increase the population. This decrease is due to the reformist encouragement for mix marriages. Compare this with the reformists and convertionists whose policies in USA have totally failed and 99% of the intermarried couples whose childrens navjotes were done have disowned Zoroastrianism. This is because there is no community sense or oneness in this community.

Please note that consecreted varaisaiya urine is always practiced since time immemorial in Zoroastrianism during all our religious ceremonies.

However you are totally ignorant, we do not circumscribe, it is only done by persons belonging to Ahbramic religions i.e. Jews and Muslims.

You and your elk should start a new religion known as Silooism where you can encourage all the vices like one night stands, drugs, no agiaries, do away with all religious rituals, no following of avesta/vendidad, yasna etc, no wearing of sudra kusti, do away with prophet Zarathustra and his gathas. Perhaps put your frame instead as prophet Siloo. Please start it is Mumbai I want to see you and your hidden elk hounded by the other fanatic communities in Mumbai.

All the best for your new religion,

Tina, do not worry most of these reports are erronous anyways.

  23. gb

These figures are correct. These are girls only born in mumbai only in the year 2011. Wherever you are staying outside india, you should include your 3 girls in the census of that country. According to all india status of 2001 census, we were only 69,601 total parsi zoroastrian population in india. The new figures will come on 31st march, 2013 which will be around 60,000 in the whole of india. You can check bpp mumbai website but it is useless you including your three daughters in census of india. In Mumbai, we have 300 births in a year and 900 deaths in a year. So 600 individuals reducing multiply by last ten years, it means 6,000 will definetely decrease in the total figures. This is my personal opinion and I could be wrong. Wish you all the best. God Bless You.

Hello Piloomani, it i granny Siloo here. First of all, you are totally wrong about the communities in North America. Many get married to nonParsis, but the difference is that since their spouses and children are not ostracized more than a few children join the faith and many are now even practicing priests. Also, I did not say that ALL Parsis circumcised their children. However many do as some sort of “custom” that is swallowed whole, you know, like drinking cow piss and divoo and all the other rituals, mostly taken from Hinduism.

Yes, I can form my own religion but why should i when we have a perfectly good one, albeit one that is being abused and hijacked by the conservatives such as yourself. Oh, and by the way, what happened to your atheist beliefs? All withered, perhaps?

Lastly, as for your sidekick (?) phiroze, at first I thought the man was an idiot but now I am of the mind that he is severe psychological issues. I can’t waste my time replying to his gupsup but if indeed you do know him personally, please do us all a favor and see to it that he gets the proper treatment that he needs.

    Thank you.

I used to agree that Parsi women should only marry Parsi men, because we were so few in numbers, and because resulting children may feel distant from Parsi/Zoroastrian culture, or may be shunned (in India).

So I searched and searched, and dated, and spent many years in various relationships with Parsi men, who ultimately decided they weren’t ready for marriage or children. By the time I finally found a nice Parsi man not afraid of committment, it was too late to have children. We tried and tried, went to fertility clinics, but nothing worked. So I did what everyone asked. But now I can’t help increase our population. I’m depressed and upset and angry, at everyone who made me wait. I will never have a direct descendent, ever.

So which situation would you all rather have? Someone who loves their religion, encourages others to marry Parsis, who has found a wonderful non-Parsi spouse willing to raise children Zoroastrian — and is able to actually bear children who will love the religion? Or someone who follows your advice, but by the time they find a suitable Parsi husband/wife, is unable to bear children, and unable to increase our population at all?

Silly siloooo, can you back up your absurd claims with facts and figures or should we just laugh it off as usual? Had you been in mumbai we Parsis could have sponsered free treatment for your pathological lying.

  35. Siloo Kapadia

Roda deekra, I agree totally! This whole concept of only marrying other Parsis is a lot of kutroo-nu-caca. Only racists who mistakenly believe in some “great Aryan heritage” despite all the scientific facts otherwise want such nonsense to continue. They would much rather see the religion die off than see nonParsis enter the fold. That is why I have always said that we should split up the money and let the racists go their way, and we ours. But that is not agreeable to them, because as long as they have their clutches on our money, they have a little power. Let’s face it, in 50 years time they will nearly all be gone anyway, and they few of them that survive will get the money, them and their children. After all, I think that is the plan.

I really pity your practical situation. It is never too late. You can still adopt a poor and needy child (preferably of both zoroastrian parents) and continue your family life peacefully. Never donate anything when you both husband and wife are alive. Make a proper will and testament duly registered in a court of law and preferably made through an advocate. I know somebody personally who saw almost 100 parsi girls for matrimonial purpose and who is now unhappily married and separated. Girl ran away with all the personal belongings and trespassed in a bpp flat unofficially and made her husband miserable and penniless. Now, she is not signing divorce papers till bpp transfers new flat in her name. You can do wonders if you know somebody preferably the encyclopedia. Think and act in to-day’s times. God Bless You.

I identify with the situation Roda described, but I am a man. Piloomani’s nasty remarks about Roda’s expectations being to “sky high” are mean spirited, and unfairly target women. Sky high expectations from women is NOT the reason why “women marry late”. (Andy why does no one care if men marry late?)
Women, like men, are just trying to find a decent partner. But it often takes years. And often, people are in relationships for a few years before one partner decides to end it. Most women over age 30, knowing their body clocks are ticking, also know they have to have reasonable expectations. And most Parsi women I know are very “out there”, trying very actively to find mates, in time for their body clocks to work. I also know many Parsi men who are also actively trying to find mates. But, because many Parsi men, like other men, feel that they can father children until they are 80, they often want to wait and wait till marriage.
I am a man who waited till age 40 (I wanted to be a funloving bachelor, and no one, including my own mother, had a problem with this) to start looking for a spouse. After several failed relationships, 8 years later I finally found a Parsi women 13 years younger than me. But by then, I myself had fertility problems. Many people dont know how common male factor infertility is. At the moment, we are trying to find a Parsi male sperm donor. One of my cousins might be willing; but using ‘known donors’ can also create uncomfortable situations. So we may resort to having a fertility center recruit a male Parsi sperm donor for us. Or perhaps use a non-Parsi Indian donor.
We’ve also investigated adoption. But trust me there are NO children of Parsi families available for adoption.
We have many Parsi friends dutifully having 2-3 children as soon as possible, to increase our numnbers. But I know of many Parsi couples (where one or both spouses are Parsi) who have fertility problems. Some were successful, some are still trying, but many have given up. Blaming women, or men, for our community’s problems, is NOT the answer. We need to speak more openly about these issues.

Your statements about few children joining our faith is correct i.e. only 1% of the children born of mixed marriages continue to practise their brand of Zoroastrianism where even the bare basic rituals are discarded and they are only namesake Zoroastrians.

    Dear Sillo,
Your posts are getting more and more obnoxious and personal. Suggest you maintain the decorum on this blog and not hijack ongoing discussions here.
All your posts regardless of the topic under discussion have a common agenda that you want to push across (if you feel you have made a point, please move on).
btw, ‘kutroo-nu-caca’ is not even a phrase that Parsis use. Not sure where you picked that.

Burzin, what you say is correct. These imposters always try to misslead others by their posts having a common agenda but expose themselves while trying to be smart alecs. They are not even half the Parsis they claim to be.

I am a parsi girl. I have a very serious doubt.. I NEED HELP! When a parsi-boy marries a non-parsi-girl, their children are accepted in the community as parsis…. but when a parsi-girl marries a non-parsi-boy, their children are NOT accepted in the community as parsis!
In a community like parsi, which is considered the most literate and developed community, WHY THIS INEQUALITY???

As a 21st century parsi girl, I consider this as my right to raise this question, and if any of the parsi specially is reading this,I request U to post your opinions on this matter!
Common people, raise your voice to enlighten the truth! I really need to know!
