Iranshah Udvada Utsav 2024 A Grand Success

The 4th Edition of the Iranshah Udvada Utsav was held from December 27-29, 2024. The Utsav built on past three editions in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Below is a day by day report shared by Delaveen Tarapore.

Day 1: A Grand Celebration of Parsi Culture and Heritage

Udvada, December 28, 2024 – The first day of the Iranshah Udvada Utsav held at the Udvada Gymkhana grounds commenced on a solemn note with the event organisors taking a moment to pay homage and tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, with a minute of silence.

The evening’s hosts, Viraf Patel infused energy and humor into the gathering by engaging in light hearted banter with Surat’s Mahrukh Chichgar before transitioning to a soulful rendition of Parsi Songs called Monajats by Mani Rao, performed by students of the PP Mistry High School. The devotional songs provided a melodious and serene start to the festivities.

The official commencement was marked by an auspicious lamp-lighting ceremony led by Vada Dasturji Khurshed Dastoor, the high priest of the Iranshah Atashbehram, and the distinguished Guests of Honour:

In keeping with the true spirit of Zoroastrian culture, the event paid tribute to various individuals and groups for their significant contributions:

The evening also celebrated the intersection of Parsi and Gujarati cultures. Mahrukh Chichgar acknowledged the significance of cultural icons like the Gara saree and Garba dance, followed by an energetic performance by United Beats, which beautifully highlighted the harmonious blend of traditions.

Adding a touch of humor, the audience was treated to the farcical play ‘Mungi Stree,’ performed by the talented Yazdi Karanjia and group, which left the crowd in fits of laughter. The day concluded with a mesmerizing musical performance by Merlins Filmytronix and the Legends, providing a grand finale to an eventful first day.

The Iranshah Udvada Utsav continues over the next two days, promising even more celebrations that honor the illustrious heritage and vibrant spirit of the Parsi community.

Day 2 of Iranshah Udvada Utsav 2024: A Celebration of Zoroastrian Unity, Heritage, and Excellence

Udvada, Gujarat – December 28, 2024:
The second day of the Iranshah Udvada Utsav 2024 was a vibrant celebration of Zoroastrian culture, history and achievements, showcasing the community’s deep connection with its roots and its vision for the future.

The second day of the Utsav commenced with a Panel Discussion on ‘Building a sustainable and enterprising future for the Parsi Community’ with Panelist – Er. Dr. Ramiyar Karanjia, Mr. Noshir Dadrawala, Er. Zerick Dastur and Mr. Hoshang Gotla, with Ms. Delaveen Tarapore as the Moderator.
The morning also witnessed a Cookery Workshop conducted by mother-son duo of Frohar Caterers of Udwada, Hilla and Shezad Marolia, where authentic Parsi delicacies like Bhakra and Tarapori Patio were prepared.

The evening began with a standing ovation from the audience of around 1,500 attendees, following the screening of a powerful video highlighting the sacrifices, contributions, and legacy of the nine Athornan families of Udvada, the dedicated custodians of the sacred Pak Iranshah Fire.

Host Shreas Pardiwala set the tone for the evening with his engaging charm and humor, introducing the distinguished Vada Dasturji Khurshed Dastoor, who delivered a heartfelt welcome address. Vada Dasturji spoke of the enduring spirit of the Zoroastrian faith and the sacrifices made by ancestors to safeguard the Pak Iranshah Fire.

The event was graced by two esteemed chief guests, Dr. Nozer Sheriar and Mr. Kaizad Bharucha, who were felicitated by Vada Dasturji for their remarkable contributions.

The felicitation segment continued with honors for remarkable Zoroastrians who have made significant contributions across industries:

The cultural highlights of the evening were equally captivating. Havovi and Ervad Ramyar Karanjia performed an evocative rendition of “The Tragic Tale of Rustom and Sohrab” from the Shahnameh, blending storytelling with traditional singing.

This was followed by the spectacular theatrical performance “Sasanian Empire – The Tale Untold”, directed by Maharukh Chichgar and Farzan Karanjia, which transported the audience through the grandeur and fall of Iran’s noble kings.

The energy continued to rise with the electrifying dance performance by Burzin Engineer and his team from Tyro Transformation, seamlessly blending Bollywood and South Indian beats.

The finale of the evening was a mesmerizing musical journey led by Shehzad Karanjia and his band, leaving the audience grooving to a mix of timeless classics and contemporary hits.

The evening also featured engaging interludes, such as a comedic monologue by Shreas Pardiwala dressed as ‘Shireen – the Instagram-famous character known for her relatable Parsi humor’, and a fun audience game, “ABC Parsi Style”.

As the curtains fell on Day 2, anticipation for Day 3 ran high, with an exciting lineup featuring talks by Padmashree Yazdi Karanjia, Jimmy Mistry, and Hormuzd Khambata, along with more cultural and community celebrations.

A Glorious Finale on Day 3

Udvada, Gujarat – December 29, 2024


The Iranshah Udvada Utsav (IUU) 2024 concluded its spectacular three-day celebration of Parsi culture and heritage with a memorable finale on Day 3. Organized by the Foundation for Development of Udvada (FDU), this year’s event reaffirmed its mission of preserving and celebrating the rich Zoroastrian legacy.

The final day commenced with a solemn pre-show led by Hoshang, featuring safety announcements, a heartfelt two-minute silence in memory of late Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, and the reading of a letter from Minister of Palimentary Affairs and Minister of Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju. The event also reflected on the highlights of Day 2, including historical plays, captivating performances, and community activities that brought Zoroastrian history and culture to life.

The main show, hosted by the esteemed Maharukh Chichgar, opened with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, followed by the iconic hymn “Chhaiye Hame Zarthosti.” The audience was then treated to the “Iranshah no Povaado,” beautifully sung by Havovi Karanjia, and an inspiring video presentation, “Parsi Lustre on Indian Soil,” which honored the remarkable contributions of the Parsi community by Stalwarts like Madam Cama, JRD Tata, Sam Maneckshaw and many more.

The day’s highlights included a series of moving speeches by Guests of Honour:

  1. Padma Shri Yazdi Karanjia, distinguished Gujarati theatre artist renowned for his contributions to Parsi theatre. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 for his services in the field of arts. The audience was treated to an unforgettable moment during Padma Shri Yazdi Karanjia’s speech, where his signature humor lit up the room. In his inimitable style, Yazdi Karanjia spoke about the importance of being a good human being, balancing life’s activities at the right pace, and embracing happiness.
  2. Padma Shri Yazdi Italia, an Indian doctor and scientist who led the establishment of India’s first Sickle Cell Anemia Control Program in Gujarat. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2024 for his pioneering contributions to healthcare.
  3. Jimmy Mistry, an Indian entrepreneur, designer, and real estate developer, known for founding Della Group, which operates in sectors like hospitality, adventure parks, and luxury villas.

The event Felicitated:

1. Hormuzd Khambata – a global icon in the world of dance and performing arts.

2. Special recognition of the Udvada Gaam Panchayat for their tireless efforts in preserving the cultural fabric of Udvada.

Each speaker shared heartfelt anecdotes and stories, reinforcing the importance of unity, community, and tradition.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Hoshang Gotla, who expressed gratitude to the performers, organizers, sponsors, volunteers, and guests, and expressed regret over the absence of Dignitaries like Minister of Finance and Energy & Petrochemicals, Govt. of Gujarat, Shri Kanubhai Desai; Lok Sabha MP (Valsad), Shri Dhaval Patel; Minister of Palimentary Affairs and Minister of Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju and Smt. Smriti Irani due to the seven day sate mourning period observed by the Government of India.
