March 27, 2011 marks the start of the 100th year of The B.D. Petit Parsee General Hospital in its service to the Community.
The Hospital has a new and very informative website with some great photographs of the actual facility.
Parsis have long been pioneers in the medical facility field in Mumbai. To name just a few…. J.J. Hospital, Masina, Tata Memorial and of course our Parsi General…as it is always referred to.
To say that I, like countless others have a personal connection to the hospital, would be stating the obvious. The hospital has been home to some of the happiest and the saddest moments of my life. I was born here, so was my sister. And so many other dear friends. This was also the place that my grandparents….my mamaiji, and my bapavaji and bapaiji breathed their last.
Architecturally and urbanistically, the hospital is a microcosm in it of itself. Once you enter inside the compound, you do not feel as if you are in the urban chaos of Mumbai.
Years ago in 1987 myself and a few fellow scouts from the Sethna’s 18th West Bombay Scout Group had an opportunity to work at the hospital as volunteers. As Boy Scouts of India’s oldest running Scout Group we had to perform social service as part of our President’s Scout Award. We worked in the Men’s wards helping the doctors and nurses with basic tasks like preparing dressings etc and other general work. This gave us a fascinating insight into the workings of this hospital.
This hospital is truly a Parsi treasure and more power and strength to the hospital in the coming years.
