Monday, March 27, 2006 (Lucknow):
The Lucknow High Court and other courts in the city remained shut on Monday to protest against the murder of Meher Bhargava.
Meher, the wife of Congress politician Luv Bhargava, died on Saturday after she was shot in the neck in late February while trying to protect her daughter-in-law from molesters.
She battled for her life in a Delhi hospital for nearly a month before succumbing to her injuries.
Hundreds of people also came out in Lucknow on Monday evening to take part in a candlelight protest against the murder.
Against the backdrop of growing public outrage, investigations have finally picked up pace. They will now be monitored directly by the IG Lucknow.
The Uttar Pradesh police have also launched special teams to trace Bhargava’s killers. This comes a day after the police arrested criminal-turned-politician KD Singh in connection with the shooting.
