Bombay Parsi Punchayet constitutes committee to resolve issues facing the community

Trustees of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet, founded in the 17th century to look after the welfare of the Parsi community, have constituted a 16-member consultative committee of prominent people to resolve contentious issues facing the community.

banner_bppThe objective of forming the committee is to “resolve and move forward on some of the long-standing issues and challenges concerning the community’s assets and community’s welfare,” said a press note issued on Thursday.

It will also provide a sounding board to the trustees.

The committee comprises the Udwada high priest Khurshed Dastur, former BPP trustees Arnavaz Mistry, Jimmy Mistry, Khojeste Mistree, Dinshaw Mehta, Dinshaw Tamboly and Burjor Antia, industrialist Cyrus Guzder, solicitor Berjis Desai, adman Sam Balsara, chartered accountants Yezdi Bhagwagar and Yezdi Malegam, Parsi General Hospital managing committee president Homa Petit and joint honorary secretary Hector Mehta, Fali Poncha and Hoshi Sinor.

The trustees and the committee have met twice and have had some preliminary discussions and identified some pressing issues. “The subjects that will occupy them in the coming months will be the Parsi General Hospital, Parsi Lying Hospital, a new buildings at Bharucha Baug, Panthakee Baug, Godrej Baug and Dadar Parsee colony, Bhabha Sanatorium, maintenance of Doongerwadi and Major Morena Trust,” said the press release.

“The Trustees clarified that the role of the Consultative Committee is Advisory in nature and the ultimate decision-making authority remains only with the Trustees. This communication is being issued to uphold the highest tradition of transparency by the Trustees who were duly elected by Universal Adult Franchise,’’ it said.
