Parsi election to be an expensive affair

The election for a single vacant seat for the position of trustee of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) is set to be an expensive affair. With no code of conduct in place, estimates are that the poll expense could be close to Rs1 crore — well over the Rs25 lakh limit set for Lok Sabha elections.

By Ashutosh Shukla | DNA

“A code of conduct was proposed, but trustees did not agree. Organising the bypoll will be an expensive affair, as we will have to spend money on sheds due to the monsoon season,” said chairman of the BPP, Dinshaw Mehta.

Apart from the banners and posters that are put up, a large amount is spent on dinner parties. Since Parsis are known to have elaborate dinners, a dinner for around 200 people costs about Rs1 lakh.

Two candidates DNA spoke to said they had not set any limit and that their expenses would depend on the money spent by the other side. “The demand for a code of conduct came in late. What we can do is sit together and agree on something. As of now, no target has been set,” said Anahita Desai, one of the candidates.

Mancherji Cama, the other candidate, said: “If candidates are willing, we can have a tea-and-biscuits campaign. But I am doubtful of the outcome.”

The BPP is the apex body of the Parsis in the city and amongst the largest land owners.

If the concerned candidates in the fray are genuinely interested in welfare of the community and save the funds, they should jointly request the Trustees to postpone the Election because in the past upon the demise of Mrs. Kavarana, the Board worked with six Trustees. The Election can be conducted after the  monsoon season.
The concerned candidates can assist the Trustees in working out a code of Conduct for Election. But the question is are the candidates keen on serving the community or rooting for dynastic rule. The answer is written on the Wall and it is for the Electorate to vote for any candidate of their choice from the really limited choice but ensure that regardless of their Religious ideology they should not subvert the aims of the Settlors by  meekly setting up  a dynastic precedent. Once this disease sets in, there will be NO ACCOUNTABILITY though even now this is very little.

This amount should be recovered from those who advocated and wanted adult franchise and the trustee who brought this election on to the community by running away mid term as also from those who had voted for him.

It is shame that on one side we in overseas countries get videos of parsis they are so poor and go without food for 4~5 days and here the BPP is spending crore of rupees to get a person of the trustees liking. Isn’t a shame on our community. What type of double standards BPP is having.Maybe after the election and if the trustees donot approve the chosen candidate are they going in the court too.

I agree. B.P.P. should set a precedent for recovering cost of expenditure caused by frivolous and harebrained actions of Trustee. Identically the cost of Lawyer’s fees for Supreme Court hearing should be recovered from those who approached the Supreme Court using High Priests as Armour shields.

I read a very sensible suggestion in Jame that elections should be held concurrently. Meaning thereby whosoever is gets elected in 2011 will have term of 5 years till 2015 only and not 7 years because if  it is seven years for the new incumbent then once again elections will become due in 2018. In fact I have another suggestion. B.P.P. should declare that there are 2 vacancies, one due to Dadrawalas resignation and another as Contingent. i.e. in even of any further resignation or due to natural causes, the community is not forced to go for another election. They can invite candidates for 2 vacancies and the person who secures second highest will be like the proverbial twefth man in Cricket.

When incumbent Chairman Dinshaw Mehta proposed a Code of Conduct for these elections with a proposal to cap expenditure, among other things, it was instantly shot down by WAPIZ candidate Anahita Desai’s husband and sitting trustee Yazdi Desai. Need one say more? This should be the mother of all wake-up calls for a comatose electorate to help cease further mangling of illustrious Bombay Parsee Panchayet name.
It is clearly apparent why the Desai Mistry & Mistree clique so desperately wants one of their own and will go all out to get her “on board for hassle-free smooth operations”. What a roaring pun!  Smooth operations as in arbitrary decisions which are overly generous to their personal benefit, but fall foul of BPP Trust Deed and interest of deserving beneficiaries?!
Sorry Mr Cama, but there will be no takers for your sensible tea and biscuits offer, because we are majorly a gluttony freebie bourgeois community more than a mistakenly believed elite forward thinking one which is but a microscopic percentage. Don’t forget in the last polls, WAPIZ introduced the fad of way to a voter’s ballot is through his stomach and his pocket. But in true gentlemanly style you can as an independent candidate of impeccable integrity set a welcome principled trend by declaring your election budget and source of this income, compelling other contestants to do the same if they don’t want income tax sleuths swooping down on them.

True what you say though I feel it is an uphill task for Cama to get support. The issue here is of ethics. When I to day opened Mumbai Samachar, my hunch was proved correct. The female candidate had  compelled workers at Towers of Silence to sign on dotted lines  praising her and with a litlle bit of questioning these workers have splled the beans. Actually what is more shameful is incusion of names and signatures of persons who are not employed at Doongerwadi. Is this not an act of mischief to get them enployed  through backdoor? Before I forget, could it not be possible that all so called HIGH priests too were ‘manipulated into signing statements praising her so called qualities. Ditto for those VICE PRESIDENS and other high sounding designations of Anjumans having Parsees not more than double figures.

Today’s WAPIZ page in FPJ carries frontal attacks on rival contender, and a page full of endorsements for their own candidate but not a word on the expose of the sneakily obtained supporting signatures of indebted Doongerwadi staff members by the latter.

Messrs. Contradhongi/Farsak Ashli, the manipulation of staff at Towers of Silence to laudably endorse a running candidate for running election campaign 2011 is déjà vu. Stage managing anyone including High Priests beholden to BPP is possible.

Something similar had happened in 2003 when the late husband of a present day BPP Trustee was confidently contesting for a second term in office. The presumptuous man somehow managed to get a few big and small priests to support his candidature as “SAVIOUR of Parsee Race and Religion (sic)”. Unfortunately for him, each of these 21 signatory dasturjis was individually approached for answers to a probing questionnaire by someone in the know of truth who sought to rip-off this mask from the face of a great pretender misleading the gullible community with double-standards in private and public life. Not one priest was forthcoming and able to justify endorsement to promote such a person as a worthy BPP Trustee. The candidate lost face and elections too and went into oblivion until piggy-backing in the first fray under Adult Franchise for a short lived return.

Such a regrettable fallout of changing the earlier established election process of the 7 Bombay Parsee Panchayat Trustees away from the responsibility of donor members alongside representatives of the Anjuman Register, to Adult Franchise polling.

Ms. Sorabjee, I am no admirer of any of the candidates seeking to become Trustees but with reference to your  post all that I can say is that inspite of strictures by no less than High Court, the so called editorial team of notoriously known Dhobhi Talaowallas cannot resist showing their Laloo class. They really know how to perform disservice to their own candidate. If there are such supporters, who needs opponents.?

    More hypocrisy:
In her election manifesto, Mrs Desai lists one of her achievements as :
“a Trust Scheme for Mobeds, (a Nusli Wadia-BPP initiative) under the Chairmanship of Vada Dasturji, Dr. Firoze M. Kotwal”
Mr. Nusli Wadia’s grandfather was Mohammed Ali Jinnah, an Ismaili Khoja.Mr. Jinnah’s grandfather, Poonja Gokuldas Meghji, was a Hindu Bhatia Rajput from Paneli village in Gondal state in Kathiawar.Dina Wadia’s mother, Rattanbai Petit, had coverted to Islam, and was buried in the Khoja Shia Isna’Ashari Cemetery, Mazgaon.
These folks have the temerity to rail and rant against the initiation of a Russian in to Zoroastrian priesthood.
Why does the High Priest Kotwal, team up with and accept the charity of the descendant of an Ismail-Khoja and a Christian?

There allegedly appears to be another controversy brewing about candidate Anahita Desai’s supporters’ list. This information yet unconfirmed says that ex-VC Ms Mehroo Bengalee has objected vide a letter dated June 2, 2011, to her name therein as a signatory. Coming days will unveil the real story. But if there is an iota of truth in this revelation then Ms Desai may as well say goodbye to her credibility as an aspiring BPP Trustee where voters look for trust worthiness in their chosen candidate. This would be her second faux pas after the underhand procurement of signatures of Doongerwadi staff.
