Aashim Tyagi has some beautiful images of B. Merwan & Co. the most famous Irani café in Mumbai. At the start of the year there was a frenzy in Mumbai concerning the news that Merwan was closing down for good. Long lines and longer eulogies were written. Thank god for us…..they were all wrong.

I was at B.Merwan & Co, an old bakery and cafe famous for its mava cakes, pav, sweet chai and greasy eggs; located near Grant Road railway station in Mumbai.
The reason for the Parsi cashier’s disgruntlement with journalists was the widely reported (and as it turns out, wrong) story of B.Merwan shutting its doors and joining the long list of defunct Irani cafés in Mumbai.
“We were merely renovating but no one bothered to ask,” he said.Instead everyone wrote their eulogies.
“We were just shutting down for a month to renovate”
As you can see, it is business as usual at B. Merwan & Co. same old delicious cakes, same sweet chai but with newly laid tiles.
OK….back to the mawa cake chomping
