Under a canopy of stars at The Lannin in Eisenhower Park, the 2024 Soirée Under the Stars annual fundraising gala celebrated excellence and dedication in healthcare on Saturday, November 9. Dr. Shahriyour Andaz, Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Director of Thoracic Oncology, was the recipient of the esteemed Mary Pearson Award, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to the hospital and the South Shore community.
Dr. Andaz, who joined Mount Sinai South Nassau in 2004, has been instrumental in advancing the prevention, early detection, and treatment of lung cancer. His advocacy led to the hospital’s participation in the International Early Lung Cancer Action Project (IELCAP) in 2006, which brought free CT scans to high-risk patients. This initiative significantly increased lung cancer detection at early, curable stages, transforming patient outcomes.
“Dr. Andaz is the epitome of a compassionate, expert, skilled physician,” said Dr. Adhi Sharma, President of Mount Sinai South Nassau, during the evening’s ceremony. “His tireless dedication has not only saved lives but inspired countless staff members and patients alike.”
The Mary Pearson Award, named in honor of the hospital’s first administrator, is given annually to individuals whose efforts significantly advance the hospital’s mission. Dr. Andaz’s career includes pioneering work as the first surgeon on Long Island to perform robotic-assisted bi-lobectomy and surgical removal of the thymus gland, cementing his legacy as a leader in thoracic oncology.

The event also honored Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s President and CEO, Linda Armyn, for her organization’s enduring support of Mount Sinai South Nassau, and Shaeda Alloo, a veteran respiratory therapist, with the Cupola Award for her tireless dedication during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Bethpage and Ms. Armyn have been essential partners in advancing public health education and initiatives,” noted Dr. Sharma. “Ms. Alloo, through her dedication and professionalism, embodies the spirit of our mission.”
The Soirée Under the Stars raised critical funds for the hospital’s cancer programs, underscoring Mount Sinai South Nassau’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services for South Shore residents. Guests enjoyed an evening of dining, music, and heartfelt tributes, all while supporting the hospital’s mission to deliver exceptional care.
For Dr. Andaz, the evening was a culmination of years of dedication to his patients and community. “This honor is a reflection of the collaborative efforts of the entire team at Mount Sinai South Nassau,” he remarked. “Together, we are making a difference.”
As the evening drew to a close, the star-studded gala served as a reminder of the profound impact that healthcare professionals like Dr. Andaz, Ms. Alloo, and organizations like Bethpage Federal Credit Union have on the lives of patients and their families.
